Why your skin type matters

Knowing your skin type isn't just a fun quiz — it's the foundation of any skincare routine that actually works. Using oily-skin products on dry skin can trigger flaking and dehydration; using rich, occlusive creams on oily skin can clog pores and cause breakouts. The right products + the right facial cadence, matched to your real skin type, is what produces visible results.

The five main skin types — quick guide

Oily skin — overactive sebaceous glands produce excess oil all over the face. You'll notice shine within an hour or two of washing, enlarged pores especially across the nose and forehead, and a tendency toward breakouts. Often runs in families, common in teens and 20s, and frequently improves with age.

Dry skin — skin doesn't produce enough natural oil. You'll feel tightness after cleansing, see flaking or rough patches especially in winter, and notice fine lines more readily. Often genetic but worsens with age, harsh climates, hot showers, and over-cleansing.

Combination skin — the most common adult skin type. Oily T-zone (forehead, nose, chin) with normal or dry cheeks. Requires zone-specific care.

Sensitive skin — reacts easily to ingredients, fragrance, temperature changes, or stress. Often shows redness, stinging, or irritation. Can overlap with any other type.

Normal skin — well-balanced, neither oily nor dry, even tone, fine pores. Rarer than the wellness internet pretends. If you have it, the goal is maintenance.
